The JomSocial Team will be observing the New Lunar Year / Chinese New Year celebration which falls on Monday, 23rd January 2012 until Tuesday, 24th January 2012. There will be a delay in support delivery starting this weekend until the abovementioned date. 

The New Lunar Year is celebrated throughout Asia in countries with significant Chinese populations. In Malaysia, it is considered a major holiday and is celebrated by all of us irregardless of race and religion. Traditionally the family members roll up their sleeves to clean up the house to remove ill-fortunes and to make way for new luck. Family members will look forward to a family dinner feast which is organized on the Eve of New year while kids will be most gleeful the morning after, by getting pocketful of 'Ang-Pows'; money in red paper envelopes. In Malaysia, the celebration evolved into a colorful and elaborate maze of open-houses and nation-wide festivities. I personally cant wait to get my hands on those delicious, home-cooked dimsums. They are best when prepared with a bucketful of love. :)

As a continuation of our recent announcement regarding Facebook's OAuth2.0 update which affects all JomSocial communities that rely on Facebook Connect connectivity, we are releasing a patch for JomSocial 2.2 users.

This patch is released as a courtesy for our long-time users. JomSocial 2.2 is no longer supported and all updates & patches are only available in current stable release.

Facebook has recently updated its API and make it compulsory for Facebook Connect applications to use the latest OAuth 2.0. The announcement was made last Tuesday, 13th December 2011 in the official Facebook Blog:

These new changes with Facebook Connect may affect your vibrant JomSocial community. Be wary if:

• You are still using JomSocial 2.2 and below.
  Older JomSocial versions do not support OAuth2.0. Support for the OAuth2.0 is only available in JomSocial 2.4 and above.
• Your Facebook App ID/API Key was created ages ago
  Older App ID/API Key was not configured to support OAuth2.0. You will need to create new App ID/API Key.

The happiness did not end there. On 12th November, one of our awesome developers bade Good-bye to his single life, and tied the knot with his childhood dream girl in a splendid pinkish wedding at Bandung, Indonesia. To Dimas Tekad, we wish you a blessed marriage, and may you be rewarded with plentiful kids (in most part of Asia, a large family signifies a successful life and well-being).

On 28th of November, 2011 (Monday), the Malaysian office will be closed to observe a public holiday to mark the new year of Islamic calendar. This year, the Islamic Calendar (Hijriah) celebrated the year of 1433AH on 27th November 2011. Support may slow down starting this weekend up until Monday. Some of us will still attend to critical issues on the tickets. If you wish to do a major upgrade to your site, you might want to hold off for a few days until the entire support team is back online.

If you have created tickets and have yet to receive any response, kindly login into the Support Centre to view update to your tickets.

Good news is, we now have not two, but THREE new mail servers to cope with our email system. It hints a lot on our ticket volume, eh? 

We deeply apologize for this interruption. It is certainly a nasty surprise to us, but a good lesson indeed.

"How do I know the access detail for Support Centre?"
The system will automatically send you an access information if you have never sent us any ticket before.

"I can not use my JomSocial.com email and password to login to Support Centre"
This is a different system on a different platform. If you have sent us an email before, you will receive an email with the access information.

Upgrading JomSocial has always been a simple matter of uninstalling the older JomSocial version and then installing the shiny, new and polished JomSocial 2.4. 

But hold your horses, dear friends! A responsible community manager will always follow a strict standard operating procedure before a major update is done to the website. The following steps form basic guidelines that we abide religously while upgrading any site of ours. You may tweak it to suit your needs, requirements and system configuration.

1. Plan ahead

In most cases, JomSocial is likely to be one of the most active areas of your website. It is the primary gathering point of your community and as such, a broken home will tarnish your reputation as a good host. Plan for the most suitable time to do an upgrade, for example in the middle of the night, when most people are asleep and when your users may at its lowest point. You may resort to Google Analytics to help you out in identifying the appropriate time & day for the upgrade.

2. Keep your users informed

Once a suitable time has been identified, always let your users know about this so that they are not surprised to see the site offline / in maintenance mode. This is also a good opportunity for you to engage your community and give them a voide to decide on proper time & date. Always assure your users that their information and data will be safe and secured. Do also provide with an estimate of how long the upgrade process would take. A typical JomSocial upgrade will take 15 minutes at most, but this does not put the time taken to make backup into the equation. Depending on your system and preference, it may take from 15 minutes to an hour for a complete upgrade of JomSocial.

3. Backups, Backups & Backups

I cannot stress this enough, a good webmaster always create a backup of his entire site and database from time to time, even when the site runs smoothly. If your last complete backup was months ago, shame on you. The necessity to have a complete backup and a backup of the backup is critical while attempting any major upgrade to your site. Be it an installation of new components, or upgrade of existing ones (jomSocial in this matter), never forget to make a backup. One handy component that will truly ease your life is Akeeba, http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/access-a-security/site-security/backup/1606 which automates creation of backups (files+database) on a predefined schedule.

At the very least, consult your webhost to get a backup done for you. :)

4. Run an upgrade on local test site

With the fresh backup files, create a mirror of your actual site in local development server. The purpose of having a separate mirror site hosted locally is for you to safely run upgrade trials without having to worry with any untoward damages on the live site. As the mirror site closely mimic the original Joomla system with the same template and extensions, you can easily detect possible clashes or upgrade errors during or upon the end of upgrade procedure. Fixing would also be easier and faster as it would have a much lower latency resulting with faster response time. 

If you are not sure on the cause of your errors, please push the local site into a subdomain of your live site so that our eager Support Team can assist you. Dont forget to provide us with a temporary super admin account, FTP detail and phpmyadmin access!
